The Opalona shirt, details and know-how

The Opalona shirts are the outcome of an original design process with a meticulous selection of fabrics and a carefully though out conception.
The design process takes place in Paris, fabrics, buttons and labels are sourced from the European Union, and the manufacturing process also takes place in the European Union.

Cut

All Opalona shirts have the same shape and are slightly slim fitted. The shirt's length is short enough to be worn with a suit or untucked for a casual look. The shirts all have the same sleeve length.

Have a look at the men's size guide or the women's size guide to see all the measurements.

Collars

Most Opalona shirts are made with a cut-away collar, a classic collar or a button down collar. Some of our shirts have a different collar such as the wing collar or the club collar.

The cut-away collar The cut-away collar has 2 buttons, and a height of 4,5 cm (measurement taken from the back of the collar). The cut-away collar shirt can be worn with or without a tie but is better with a classic width tie instead of a narrow one. The collar points measure 8.5cm. The cut-away collar has sewn-in, non-removable collar stays.

The classic collar The classic collar is timeless, and can be worn for any occasion, with or without a tie or a bow tie. Its height is 3,5 cm (measurement taken from the back of the collar) and the collar points measure 7 cm. The classic collar has sewn-in, non-removable collar stays

The button down collar The button down collar is normally used for casual oxford shirts, but it can also be worn with a suit. A tie goes well with a button down collar but the knot has to be small. The 2 buttons at the points help the collar stay in the right place especially when the shirt is worn under a sweater.
Collar height : 3,5 cm (from the back of the collar)
Collar points : 6 cm.

Cuffs

French cuffs The French cuffs shirts are to be worn with cufflinks. The have double-folded cuffs and buttonholes on both sides to insert cufflinks.

Les poignets classiques The classic cuff shirt has one or two buttons on the cuff. The side of the cuff is beveled.

The buttons on Opalona shirts vary according to the different kinds of shirts. They are round on classic shirts and square and coloured on casual shirts (There are more than ten different colours).

Fabrics

Opalona shows its real know-how on the meticulous selection of fabrics used. The shirt's shape and details are very important but nothing is more crucial than the quality of the fabric used. Consequently, Opalona uses only high quality, easy-to-iron fabrics which give great comfort and show high resistance after many washes.

Most of the fabrics selected by Opalona are 100% cotton. Some shirts are made from linen and some from stretch cotton (cotton, lycra and elastane).

The cotton fabrics chosen for our Opalona shirts are made from the finest 2-fold cotton. A 2-fold cotton fabric, contrary to an ordinary single weave cotton, is made with 2 thin cotton yarns which are twisted before weaved. This weaving gives the fabric a fine texture and higher durability.

Opalona uses a large range of fabrics : thin, thick and plain with light and strong colours, stripes and check designs, twill, poplin, herringbone, Oxford cloth... Have a look at the fabric guide to see more details.

Patterns fabrics used for a contrasting collar and cuffs are both made from 100% cotton. They can be washed at 40° without losing their colour even if it is a very vibrant colour.

Poplin Poplin : Poplin is a thin, fine-grained and silky fabric. The weaving is done with a silk warp and a weft of worsted yarn, both of the same colour. This combination gives depth and softness to the lustre of the fabric. Our tip : A shirt made in poplin fabric can be worn for every occasion, particularly in the summertime. Poplin is the fabric generally chosen for formal occasions.

Twill Twill : Twill is a fabric with a pattern of diagonal parallel ribs. It is made by repeatedly passing the weft thread over one or more warp threads and then under two or more warp threads. Twill is supple and easy to iron. Our tip : Twill is an elegant and rigid fabric which can be worn for every occasion.

Gabardine Gabardine : Gabardine fabric is a tough, tightly woven fabric with a light reflective shine. Our tip : Gabardine is an elegant fabric suitable for dress shirts.

Herringbone Herringbone : Herringbone resembles twill due to its diagonal structure. The repeat is achieved by alternating the direction of the motif. This kind of weaving makes the herringbone fabric easy to iron. Our tip : Herringbone is a unique and elegant fabric, and is generally the same thickness as twill.

Piqué Piqué : Piqué has a vertical structure with raised parallel cords or fine ribbing which give the fabric a kind of relief. Our tip : Piqué fabric can be worn for all occasions.

Oxford Oxford : Oxford is a tough and thick fabric. The warp has two fine yarns paired together. The weft has one heavier, softly spun fill yarn and is usually colored, while the warp yarn is white. Our tip : Oxford fabric is generally worn in a casual manner but can also be worn with a suit.

Fil à fil Fil à fil : Fil-à-fil is a dense and thin fabric. The weaving alternates two colours of yarn, one colour for the weft and the other for the warp. This weaving gives a cloudy effect to the fabric. Our tip : Fil-à-fil fabric is generally worn casually or during the summer season.

Pinpoint Pinpoint : Pinpoint fabric weaving is the same as Oxford weaving but the grain is thinner and more elegant. Our tip : Pinpoint fabric is suitable for all occasions.
